About Les Chambres Chouettes

Mountain ambience ~ Catalan warmth.

Our traditional French village house has been meticulously converted to offer traditional French Chambre d'Hôtes Guest House accommodation in characterful surroundings.
Formerly the home of one of the drivers of the Train Jaune - the famous narrow gauge railway that snakes its way from Villefranche de Conflent across the Pyrenees to the Spanish border at La Tour de Carol - this spacious 3 storey building lends itself to relaxed living, with stunning views, sunny balconies and of course the invigorating mountain air of the Pyrenees.
You can walk to Fort Liberia (or take the landrover), Chapelle Notre-Dame de vie, the Vauban fortifications and Vernet-les-Bains from our doorstep.
The restaurants, cafes and shops in the village offer something for everyone.

There is free parking close by on our quiet little street.
Getting around
It is possible to get a 1 euro bus or train to Perpignan and onwards to the coast for another euro.
The wonderful Train Jaune will take you up into the mountains; prices vary. The 1 euro bus follows a similar route to the Spanish border.
Lots more information from the Tourisme Conflent-Canigou tourist office or the Villefranche de Conflent village website.

Fort Liberia

A luxurious apartment with disabled-friendly features.

This apartment is on the ground floor, within the thick stone walls of the original, medieval part of the house, so it is naturally cool in summer, but there is reverse air conditioning, just in case! We have designed it to be suitable for people with reduced mobility, so the doorways are all wide enough for wheelchairs and it is possible to travel all the way into the village by wheelchair, with a little bit of help up and down a couple of curbs. There is a raised toilet seat and shower seat, if needed.
You will find fresh bread and pastries, breakfast cereals, milk, butter, homemade yoghurts and jam in your welcome pack.
The apartment has a superb compact kitchen, offering hob, microwave, fridge, kettle, espresso and filter coffee machines and a full complement of cutlery, crockery and cooking utensils.

Canigou

A delightful ensuite room with a sunny balcony.

This is a lovely sunny room, at the front of the house, with double patio doors onto the traditional balcony, where you can eat your breakfast, on an elegant bistro set, listen to the birds and watch the hikers setting off for the hills. The windows are fitted with original wooden shutters, to keep things cool, dark and quiet, when you want to.
Your bedroom is furnished with retro 60s French furniture, plus a modern, ensuite walk-in shower, basin and toilet. The bedding is cotton and there are plenty of feather and fiber-fill pillows.
With the environment in mind, all rooms have reverse air conditioning/heating and the hot water comes via an air source heat pump.
Breakfast is plentiful, with lots of fresh fruit, bread, pastries and homemade jams and yoghurt.
There is a coffee machine on the shared landing, where you collect your breakfast, but you also have tea and coffee-making facilities in your room.

Train Jaune

A spacious ensuite room with stunning views.

A crag-facing double room on the top floor of our characterful house, just outside the walls of the Medieval village of Villefranche de Conflent, with its fine collection of bars, restaurants, craft shops and signposted walks. We are an hour's drive from the ski resorts, in one direction and the seaside in the other. The railway station is 15 minutes walk and has a mainline to Perpignan as well as the wonderful narrow-gauge Train Jaune, to the ski resorts and beyond.

The views from your windows are pretty dramatic, but there are original wooden shutters, to keep things cool, dark and quiet, when you want to.
